Jewellery Care Guide
Last updated: 2 September 2026
Anti-tarnish jewellery holds its shine for a long time when it is looked after. It loses it quickly when it is not. Almost everything that damages plated jewellery is avoidable once you know what to watch for, and none of it takes much effort.
This is what we would tell you if you were standing in front of us.
If you only remember one thing
Last on, first off.
Put your jewellery on once you are ready to leave, after perfume, deodorant, moisturiser, sunscreen, hairspray and makeup have gone on and dried. Take it off first at the end of the day, before you undress.
That one habit prevents most of the damage we see. Everything below is detail.
What anti-tarnish actually means
Every piece we sell carries a protective coating between the base metal and the air. Metal darkens because of air, moisture and the chemicals in everyday products, and the coating slows that down considerably.
It does not stop it forever. No plated jewellery is permanently tarnish proof, whatever anyone tells you, and we would rather say so plainly. How long your piece keeps its finish depends on how often you wear it, the climate where you live, your own skin chemistry, and the habits on this page.
Our pieces are nickel free and lead free, so they are safe against sensitive skin.
Because the finish depends so much on wear and storage, we do not offer a warranty against tarnishing, discolouration or wear. If something reaches you damaged, incorrect or incomplete, that is a different matter entirely and it is covered under our Refund and Return Policy.
Keep it away from
Water. Off before showering, washing up, swimming or doing the dishes. Chlorine and salt water are the worst of it.
Perfume, deodorant and body spray. The alcohol strips the coating fast. Spray first, let it dry, then put your jewellery on.
Lotion, sunscreen, oil and hair products. These build up on the surface and dull the shine.
Sweat. Take pieces off before workouts, sports, and long stretches in the heat.
Cleaning products. Off before cleaning, colouring your hair, or handling bleach, detergent, sanitiser or acetone.
Silver polish, toothpaste, baking soda and jewellery dips. These are made for solid metal and will take the plating straight off. Please never use them on anything from us.
Storing it
Keep each piece in the pouch or box it came in, and store pieces apart so they do not scratch one another. Somewhere dry, away from windows, bathrooms and direct sun.
In humid weather and through the monsoon, an airtight container or a zip lock pouch with a silica gel sachet makes a real difference. Save the sachets that come with shoes and packaged food. They are perfect for this and nobody ever thinks to keep them.
Try not to leave jewellery loose in a handbag, on a bathroom shelf, or on a windowsill.
Cleaning it
A wipe with a dry, soft cloth after each wear lifts off the sweat and oil that cause most of the dulling. A microfibre cloth works well, or the one that came with your spectacles.
If a piece needs a bit more than that, wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it completely straight away.
Do not soak it, scrub it, use a brush, use an ultrasonic cleaner, or reach for any chemical cleaner.
Handling it
Hold rings and earrings by the edges rather than the stones or the plated face. Open clasps properly instead of pulling chains over your head. Resist bending, twisting or adjusting a piece yourself, because thin chains and hoops bend easily and rarely go back.
Rings come off before weights, heavy bags and gym equipment.
And take everything off before you sleep. More chains tangle and snap overnight than at any other time.
What to expect over time
Worn a few times a month and cared for as above, a piece holds its finish for a long stretch. Worn every day, through sweat and humidity, it fades sooner. Rings and bracelets go before earrings and pendants, simply because your hands touch everything.
Fading and darkening after a good run of wear is normal for all plated jewellery. It is not a fault in the piece.
